Overview: A New Perspective of Earth
Visiting Explorer Program with Benjamin Grant
When astronauts have the opportunity to look down on Earth from space they experience a sensation that can produce a lasting effect on their psychology. This shift is commonly referred to as the Overview Effect. Recent studies suggest that exposure to this vantage point, above, leads to an overwhelming sense of emotion, a stronger connection to all living beings, and a greater appreciation for the planet. However, not everyone is lucky enough to gaze down on the beauty of our planet from space.
Through his project Overview, Benjamin Grant uses mesmerizing satellite photography to provoke the same feeling of overwhelming scale and beauty in each of us. By focusing on the places where humans are impacting the planet, he tells a story not only of man’s relationship to the Earth but also of how a determined search for novel perspectives can shift our psychology, inspire greater collaboration, and stimulate visions for a better future.
Benjamin Grant is an author, visual artist, and the founder of Overview. Overview’s work has been featured in art installations around the globe, illustrated the pages of the Harvard Business Review, and is available on the popular Instagram @dailyoverview.
Grant’s books, such as the best-selling Overview: A New Perspective of Earth, provide an innovative look at humanity’s relationship to the natural world. During his visit to The Explorers Club, he will share some of the most compelling imagery from Overview, provide an update on their current projects and what’s planned in the years ahead, and follow his talk with a book signing of his new children’s book – “The Young Explorer’s Edition”.
