In it, Schultz tells the story of Henryk Wyrzykowski, a young man hiding from the Vietnam War in a basement, translating his mother’s diaries. The diaries concern the Jedwabne massacre, an event that took place in German-occupied Poland in 1941. Schultz discusses the novel, the nature of evil, the destruction of war and the nature of courage.
