Pop-Up Magazine returns to the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House with its Winter 2020 Issue, featuring stories about a soap opera’s significance in post-Soviet Russia, flying saucers and family obsessions, the criminalization of humanitarian aid at the border, learning to say what we mean—and even some cabaret.
Pop-Up Magazine is a touring “live magazine” show, created for a stage, a screen, and a live audience. Contributors tell vivid, new, multimedia stories accompanied by illustration, animation, photography, and an original score performed onstage by our musical collaborators, Magik*Magik Orchestra. We end the night gathered around the bar, performers and audience together. And nothing goes online after—you have to be there to see it.
Contributors to Pop-Up Magazine’s Winter Issue include comedians Catherine Cohen (2/12 only–Seek Treatment podcast, High Maintenance, Broad City) and Jordan Klepper (Klepper, The Daily Show); musician Jinho “The Piper” Ferreira (Flipsyde); documentary filmmakers Isabel Castro (Crossing Over, named Best Documentary Film by GLAAD), Jon-Sesrie Goff (Smithsonian Museum of African American Art and Culture) and Cecilia Aldarondo (Memories of a Penitent Heart, Picket Line); photographer Diana Markosian (National Geographic, New Yorker, The New York Times); artists Liana Finck (The New Yorker, The Awl; author, Passing for Human) and Esther Pearl Watson (Frieze Art Fair, Webb Gallery), and more.
