Prism: Stories Through Light Showcase

Prism: Stories Through Light is a two-and-a-half-day collaborative project that pairs writers with developers and graphic artists to create stories for a unique holographic display, the Looking Glass.

Five groups of three will spend Saturday and Sunday creating a narrative experience, culminating in a public showcase here on Monday night. At the showcase, the final projects will be displayed to the public.

The authors participating in this inaugural residency are Arabelle Sicardi (Allure, Teen Vogue, Dazed), Bijan Stephen (The Nation, Vox), Gabe Hudson (Gork, The Teenage Dragon), Tim Maughan (BBC, New Scientist), and Maria Dahvana Headley(Aerie, Magonia, The Mere Wife).

Prism is a collaboration between novelist Maxwell Neely-Cohen and Brooklyn/Hong Kong based company Looking Glass. The goal of the event is to bring the literary world and the tech world closer together through creative interdisciplinary collaboration.

Maria Dahvana Headley is the New York Times-bestselling author of six books, including the novels Magonia and Aerie. Upcoming are The Mere Wife, a contemporary novel based on Beowulf, in July 2018,  and, in 2019, a new verse translation of Beowulf, both from FSG. Also upcoming is The Combustible, a queer YA superhero novel for HarperCollins. Her short fiction has been nominated for the World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson and Nebula awards, and included in many Year’s Best anthologies, including Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy. 

Gabe Hudson is the author of Gork, The Teenage Dragon and Dear Mr. President, a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award and winner of the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Hudson was named one of Granta’s 20 Best of Young American Novelists and was a recipient of the Hodder Fellowship from Princeton University, the John Hawkes Prize in Fiction from Brown University, and the Adele Steiner Burleson Award in Fiction from the University of Texas at Austin. His writing has appeared in places like The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and McSweeney’s.

Tim Maughan is an author and journalist who uses both fiction and non-fiction to explore issues around cities, class, culture, technology, and the future. His work regularly appears on the BBC, New Scientist, and Vice/Motherboard. His debut novel INFINITE DETAIL is to be published by MCD/FSG in 2019.

Arabelle Sicardi is a fashion and beauty writer. Her work has appeared in Allure, Teen Vogue, Racked, Shondaland, Dazed, among others. Paper Magazine called her “Tumblr’s go-to fashion philosopher and beauty oracle” and Bustle called her a “queer beauty icon.” She lives in New York City

Bijan Stephen is a writer, editor, and video correspondent in New York City. He is Music Critic at The Nation and an editor at Vox. His work has appeared in places like The New Yorker, The New York Times, GQ, and WIRED.
