Private Gallery Tour—The Civilized Century

With Olivier Bernier, author.

In the eighteenth century, the French felt, with reason, that theirs was a culture in which the excitement of the new was blended with extraordinary refinement. Their decor, paintings, furniture, and objects all mattered hugely: only the best and most beautiful would do. Today, we will look at some of these treasures. Paintings by Watteau, Chardin, Fragonard, David, and Mme. Vigèe-Lebrun will show us just how genius could be enhanced by the desire to please. Then we will stroll through some of the most exquisite furniture ever made; Riesener’s desks made for Marie Antoinette will have pride of place. Finally, the Museum’s extraordinary collection of Sèvres porcelain will demonstrate what happened when great artists and inventive modelers came together.

Includes luncheon with the curator at 12:15 p.m.
