Raqs Revolution is an award-winning revolutionary dance show, hosted by Torkomada, to show the varied, fascinating ethnic dances of the Middle East and North Africa to the general public, and give “a bit of home” to Middle Eastern immigrants in Harlem, NY. Because of recent rising anti-immigrant sentiments in the U.S., this project is necessary to help break down stereotypes, misunderstandings, and hostilities towards Arabic culture. This dance project also addresses the necessity of empowering men and women through dance as a way of self-expression, high self-esteem, and cultural expression.
Raqs Revolution is made possible in part with funding from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Awards and Development: Recipient of NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the NY State Council on the Arts, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council for the 2016-2018 Creative Engagement Grant, the 2018 Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone grant, the 2018 Brooklyn Art Fund grant, and the CUNY Dance Initiative in 2015.Buy tickets/get more info now
