Reasonable Doubts: Hip Hop Journalism’s Coverage of the War on Drugs

A preview event for Word: Life, a two-day conference to recognize the people, publications, and programs that have shaped hip hop journalism over the past 50 years.

Hip hop journalists have played an important role documenting the elements of hip hop: music, dance, graffiti. They’ve also articulated a hip hop perspective on the world. Join the Ford Foundation, Critical Minded, and Columbia Journalism School for an exploration of hip hop journalism’s history, beginning with a conversation between Critical Minded executive director rashid shabazz and writer and filmmaker Raquel Cepeda, editor of the landmark anthology And It Don’t Stop. A panel of influential writers Donovan Ramsey (When Crack was King), Barry Michael Cooper (New Jack City), and Kim Osorio (The Source), in conversation with Elizabeth Méndez Berry (One World), will discuss hip hop journalism’s coverage of one of the thorniest issues of our time: the war on drugs.
