Screening of documentary The Square
The award-winning, street-level view of the 2011 uprising in Egypt that led to the downfall of the hated and despotic rule of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. The film shows the encampments and protests in Tahrir Square, in the middle of the capital city Cairo, and the creative energy and heroic determination that drew millions into the struggle that toppled a regime.
Presented through the eyes of three protagonists, this is a powerful, visceral slice of reality that gives a feel for what it is like when people in their millions awaken to political life and are searching for a way to get free.
Directed by Jehane Noujaim.
“ The Square threads viewers through a complicated thicket of alliances and motivations and, most important, takes them on an immensely moving emotional journey through hope, betrayal, perseverance and surpassing courage.” — Washington Post
