Senses of Sight
Senses of Sight
In this series of classes we will explore the ideas of sight, illusion, and perception; together we will investigate how they intersect to create our understanding of place, both geographic and imagined. We will spend time with 5-6 original paintings from various time periods at both the Brooklyn Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Sight
In this session we will spend the time contemplating one work of art and discuss the multiple layers of meaning embedded within the work.
Illusion
In this session we will investigate three paintings and discuss them through the lens of readings by E.H. Gombrich, and John Berger.
Perception
In this session we will build upon the previous discussions of sight and illusion and contemplate one work of art. Specifically, we will focus on how artists’ choices, our own conceptions of the world, and knowledge influence individual and communal perceptions of a work of art. This 3rd session will take place the Met.
