Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace

On Sunday, Sept. 20, thousands of New Yorkers and visitors from around the world will gather at the Paul Milstein Reflecting Pool and Terrace in Hearst Plaza, Lincoln Center, to celebrate the Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace.

This special occasion occurs one day before the International Day of Peace and the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. Civic, interfaith and community leaders, along with New Yorkers and visitors of all ages, will be joining Shinnyo-en in a collective quest for peace through lantern floating, live music and cultural performances at one of the most iconic settings in New York City.

At sunset, Her Holiness Shinso Ito, the head priest of Shinnyo-en and one of the highest-ranking woman Buddhist leaders in the world, will preside over a special closing Lantern Floating ceremony, as hundreds of LED candle-lighted paper lanterns will be set afloat on the Milstein Pool, and illuminate Hearst Plaza into one of the most captivating experiences in the city.

The Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace is meant to inspire a spirit of harmony and compassion that transcends all boundaries of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity and religious traditionand empower people to create a stronger force for peace in our families, our communities and our environment.
