South of Gold Mountain

H.T. Chen and Dancers present the NY premiere of “South of Gold Mountain,” the compelling story of Chinese immigrants who settled in the U.S. southern states. An enlightening story of immigration, civil rights, and assimilation, the work was co-choreographed by H.T. Chen and Dian Dong, directors of the Chen Dance Center in NYC’s Chinatown. The work was researched over a 3-year period and drawn from treasured images, rich oral histories told by immigrants and their descendants, and official and private documentation. Bessie Award winner James Lo has created a contemporary sound score, along with traditional Chinese music and deep south blues for this story of new residents searching for a better life for themselves and their families.

Oct 15: Pre-show discussion with panel of scholars, historians, and civic leaders.

Oct. 18: Show starts at 3pm.
