Speaking of Shakespeare with Eleanor Bergstein, Producer of Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing, a heartwarming film that has enchanted viewers since 1987, is now thrilling a new generation of admirers as a record-setting musical. It opened in Australia in 2004, and before long it was delighting attendees in London’s storied Aldwych Theatre. It’s currently enjoying a multifaceted global tour.

The show’s creator, director, and producer is Eleanor Bergstein, who based her evocative coming-of-age story on a summer she enjoyed at a Catskills resort in 1963. We hope you’ll join us as she chats with Shakespeare Guild president John Andrews about the way she drew upon archetypes such as Romeo and Juliet.

Among other things, Ms. Bergstein will recall what she learned about filmmaking from writing It’s My Turn, a previous movie that starred Michael Douglas and provided the occasion for a hit single by Dionne Warwick. She’ll also chat about how she worked with Dirty Dancing’s vibrant cast, particularly Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze, and commissioned songs such as “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” to ensure that memories of the lovers’ trials and triumphs would endure.
