Spinoza’s Universe — Baruch College Jewish Studies Center Annual Conference

Few philosophers have elicited as much controversy as Baruch Spinoza banished from the Sephardic community for heretical views. Experts explore his philosophy in the context of 17th Century Holland and today’s world. Keynote address by author and historian Russell Shorto.

Panel 1: 10am-11:45am “Why Spinoza Now?” The relevance of Spinoza in our current political and social environment. Panel 2: 12PM-1:45PM “Spinoza and the (Post) Enlightenment” Explores Spinoza’s impact on the Enlightenment and the emergence of modern ideas of democracy, equality, diversity and more. Panel 3: 5:30PM-7:15PM “Spinoza and the Jewish Community–Then and Now.” Explores Spinoza’s relationship to the Jewish community in all its complicated history. Keynote address: 7:30PM Russell Shorto, the author of The Island at the Center of the World.
