The Art of Improvisation: Freeing Your Musical Imagination

Music is one of the most natural ways through which we can joyfully celebrate our spirit. It feels enchanting when the healing energy of the human voice joins the power of collective music-making without borders. Masterfully led by Silvia Nakkach and friends, participants will learn original strategies of improvisation in the oral tradition of devotional music and spontaneous songs.

By way of a musical journey, we will share sacred chants from the Afro-Brazilian Orixá tradition, shamanic icaros from the Amazon, and the contemplative and ecstatic experience of the Indian ragas and mantras. We will explore both the cultural values imbedded in the music and the significance of a shared communal experience, with an emphasis in the therapeutic dimensions of improvisation.

This all-levels workshop is designed to help participants to develop self-confidence by providing a positive musical experience, where there is no need of “getting it right,” but rather a readiness to deeply listen and free our voices.
