Since 1896, talented American women cartoonists have been creating beautiful, funny, and thrilling comics in newspapers and comic books, and many of them were household names. It’s time to uncover the greatest women cartoon artists up through the mid-20th century, from the author who wrote the definitive book on the topic.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore 50 years of incredible women cartoons and cartoonists who captivated millions of readers in the early 20th century.

Led by award-winning comics historian Trina Robbins, our introduction to the amazing women who drew comics from 1896 to the early 1950s will include:

• Challenges faced by women cartoonists and why appreciation lagged for their incredible works
• A discussion around Rose O’Neill, the cartoonist who drew the very first known comic strip in 1896
• Legendary cartoonists in the field, including Grace Drayton (creator of the iconic Campbell Kids), Nell Brinkley (creator of Brinkley Girls), and Lily Renee (refugee who fought Nazis with paper, pen, and ink)
• The importance of comic books during World War II, and how cartoonist Tarpe Mills’ film noir strip “Miss Fury” became loved by millions of GIs

About Trina

Trina Robbins is an American writer and cartoonist. She was an early and influential participant in the underground comix movement, and one of the first few female artists in that movement. Both as a cartoonist and historian, Robbins has long been involved in creating outlets for and promoting female comics artists. In the 1980s, Robbins became the first woman to draw Wonder Woman comics. She is a member of the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.
