The White Dress

The White Dress is a coming-of-age story which experiments with form, melding language, music, and movement to explore the lives of people from various gender identities, expressions and sexual orientations. Meet the Howard family: Theo is a busy attorney who has been pushed into the closet. Hazel is his dutiful, tiger mom wife, whose tactics have kept Theo from coming out. Their son, Jonathan, is bright, and promising, but becomes the boy either of his parents expect him to be. The piece centers on the relationship between a Black and Asian gender queer man and his parents. Part religious rite, part dance performance, The White Dress is a call for diversity both on stage and in our audiences.  It will leave you thinking about notions of self and identity you haven’t thought about before.

The showcase will be directed by and choreographed by Adin Walker (Pin* and the Blue Fairy as part of the Drama League Artist-in-Residence at Dixon Place, Rent and Singin’ in the Rain at McCarter Theater). The cast features Izzy Castaldi (Normativity at New York Musical Festival), Stanley Mathabane (Esperanza Spaldings’ Radio Music Society), Michelle Vergara Moore* (Side Effects, dir. Steven Soderbergh), Javan Nelson (The Altruists at Theatre Row) and Jean-Patrick Simeon* (The Parlour at Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre). *Appearing courtesy of AEA.

Roger Q. Mason’s works have been seen at such venues as McCarter Theatre Center and Ensemble Studio Theatre/LA.  In 2016, he was nominated for a New York Theatre Innovator Award for his short play Hard Palate.  Additionally, Mason was a finalist of the inaugural Activate: Midwest New Play Festival, semi-finalist for Theatre Masters in 2016, and the winner of an Encore Producer’s Award at the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Fresh from successful readings at the Obie-winning Fire This Time Festival in New York and Bootleg Theatre in Los Angeles, playwright Roger Q. Mason brings his new gender queer dance-theatre piece to New York for a limited engagement. The showcase marks the first collaboration between writer Roger Q. Mason and director/choreographer Adin Walker.

The show will run for only four performances as part of the Araca Project at the American Theatre of Actors from November 2-5, 2017. For more information and to purchase tickets please visit https://www.thewhitedressplay.com/
