Through a Buddhist Lens: Faith and Freedom in America | A Conversation with Duncan Williams and Pico Iyer

Join us on Thursday, February 21 at JCC Manhattan for a meaningful evening with Duncan Ryuken Williams, a Soto Zen Buddhist priest and professor of religion, and award-winning writer Pico Iyer, to celebrate Williams’s new book, American Sutra: A Story of Faith and Freedom During the Second World War.

The book takes a critical look at the Japanese-American Buddhist experience in US internment camps during World War II, and our discussion will explore questions of faith, devotion, identity, and resilience in the face of dislocation, loss, and uncertainty.

Together we will investigate what it means to be an American today. Williams and Iyer, both contributing writers to Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, will also touch upon the importance of upholding bedrock American values—religious freedom, tolerance, social and racial justice, and civil liberties—in our own historical moment.
