Treasures of Childhood: Books from the Hunt Collection of Children’s Literature

Professor and author Leonard Marcus discusses his latest exhibit in Central Library’s foyer cases, showcasing items from Brooklyn Public Library’s collection of children’s literature and the woman who founded it, Clara Whitehill Hunt. A pioneer in her profession, Hunt was an advocate for children’s literature in a time when library’s typically barred their doors to young people. She oversaw the design of children’s reading rooms in Brooklyn and chaired the committee that established the John Newbery Medal, the first literary prize honoring work for children.
