Understanding Depression and Antidepressants

Each year about 16 million Americans experience major depression.

Many receive antidepressant medications, and at any one time one in ten adults is taking them. There are many different kinds available, in what can seem like a bewildering variety. In this talk, Dr. Mendelson suggests that antidepressants shouldn’t just happen to you; instead, taking them — or receiving other kinds of treatment — should be the result of an informed choice. He draws upon art, science and his extensive experience caring for patients in making sense of the many options available for treating depression, including therapy, medication, and non-medicine procedures.
