Visionaries: Blake, Friedrich, and Their Contemporaries

The Romantic movement celebrated the visionary impulse rather than the straightforward representation of the material world. Romantic artists across Europe such as William Blake and Caspar David Friedrich turned away from the simple imitation of nature towards their own inner visions in order to capture truths beyond the visible realm. Matthew Hargraves, Chief Curator of Art Collections and Head of Collections Information and Access, Yale Center for British Art, will explore the visionary capacity of Romantic artists through the extraordinary drawings in the Thaw collection.
