The Wikimedia Commons is an online repository of educational media, containing more than 31 million files (pictures, video, sound, and so on), that are available to be copied and used with few restrictions. A companion project to Wikipedia, the information in the Commons is created, provided, and maintained largely by volunteers. This talk will introduce the Commons and describe the ongoing work of making the collection more widely accessible.

Jon Liechty has been playing music for NYSEC since 2000.  He has been volunteering on Wikimedia projects since 2007; in addition to describing and categorizing media for the Wikimedia Commons, he translates articles for the Esperanto Wikipedia and contributes to a number of other Wikipedias.

The New York Society for Ethical Culture is a humanist community dedicated to ethical relationships, social justice, and environmental stewardship. Entry to our 100-year-old building and meeting rooms is available for most wheelchair users with prior arrangements. Please call ahead  (212-874-5210 x 107) for setup of our portable system and plan to arrive one hour before start time.
