What can our individual genomes tell us about ourselves? From shedding light on our ancestry to the potential for personalized medicine, what are the risks and rewards of getting your DNA sequenced? This program brings together Spencer Wells, geneticist and director of the Genographic Project from National Geographic; Rebecca Cann, cell and molecular biologist at the University of Hawaii;Dorothy Roberts, professor of law and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania Law School; and Robert Darnell, physician and investigator at Rockefeller University, to discuss the methods, results and implications of mapping our individual genomes.

The panel will be moderated by Museum curator Rob DeSalle, whose research focuses molecular systematics and genomics.

Spencer Wells,Ph.D., is a leading population geneticist and director of National Geographic’s Genographic Project.

Rebecca Cann, Ph.D., is a cell and molecular biologist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Cann’s pioneering discovery of Mitochondrial Eve provided the foundation for understanding modern human population history and evolution.

Dorothy Roberts, Ph.D., is a professor of law and sociology at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Her acclaimed work in law and public policy focuses on urgent contemporary issues in health, social justice, and bioethics.

Robert B. Darnell, M.D., Ph.D., is a senior attending physician and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Rockefeller University. Dr. Darnell’s research combines genetic and biochemical approaches toward an improved understanding of the development of cancer and autoimmune disorders.
