Irving Sandler with Phong Bui

Art critic and historian Irving Sandler has provided first-hand accounts of modern American art, beginning with Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, when he managed the Tanager Gallery and coordinated the New York artists’ ZT Club of the New York School.

His new memoir, Swept Up by Art, chronicles his life and involvement in the art world since the ’70s. Phong Bui is an artist, writer and curator, as well as the co-founder, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Brooklyn Rail.
