Jimmy Carter: Elected President with Pocket Change and Peanuts

After being dissatisfied with the climate of injustice he witnessed in his daily life, Jimmy Carter sought a political career and was elected state senator in the early 1960s.

He won the 1970 campaign for Governor of Georgia. In 1975, Carter announced he would run for President. With an army of friends, neighbors, supporters and officials known as the Peanut Brigade, the Jimmy Carter campaign traveled across the country knocking on doors, standing at factory gates, walking the streets and asking people for their votes. Hear from the leader of the much-admired regiment herself, Dorothy “Dot” Padgett, how a peanut farmer from Georgia became the President of the United States of America.
