Radically Fair: How the Universal Basic Income Is Modernizing the Welfare State

Deutsches Haus at NYU and the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies at NYU present an evening devoted to thinking about the idea of a Universal Basic Income (UBI). Could providing everyone with a basic income, regardless of their employment situation and their needs, be a solution to the challenges our societies are facing due to globalization, digitization, and demographic change?

Thomas Straubhaar, Professor of Economics at the University of Hamburg, will present his new book Radikal gerecht: Wie das bedingungslose Grundeinkommen den Sozialstaat modernisiert [Radically Fair: How the Universal Basic Income Is Modernizing the Welfare State], followed by comments from Christian Martin, the Max Weber Chair at NYU.

Thomas Straubhaar
is the Chair of International Economic Relations at the Department of Economics at the University of Hamburg, Germany. From 1999 to 2006 he was the President of the Hamburg World Economic Archive, and, from 2005 to 2014, the Director of the Hamburg Institute for the World Economy. He has published widely on migration, demographic change, and technological change. He is the recipient of the prestigious Helmut Schmidt stipend of the ZEIT foundation at the Transatlantic Academy in Washington, D.C., and of the Ludwig Erhard award for excellence in Communicating Economics. He is one of the most prominent economists in Germany and frequently contributes his economic expertise to German language news media.

Christian Martin is the Max Weber Chair of German and European Studies at NYU’s Center for European and Mediterranean Studies and Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Kiel, Germany.
