Raise a Glass: Drinking-Themed Events in NYC

By Troy Segal

If you’re parched for knowledge about wine and spirits — or just plain parched — these upcoming tastings, classes, and activities should slake your thirst.

Stay happily on the sidelines during a Chilean wine bar war on Aug. 20 that features four teams of sommeliers constructing and stocking bars in a single day. To the spectators go the spoils: a chance to sample the vintages of Chile, along with native munchies.

Traditionally, cheese is paired with wine, but certain summery cocktails go fine with fromage, too. Learn what to mate with what in this class sponsored by superstore Murray’s Cheese on Aug. 27.

Drink local: A host of Hudson Valley hard ciders, Finger Lakes region vinos and Sixpoint’s brewed-in-Brooklyn craft beers are on hand to wash down the savory pork dishes at the Pig Island food festival on Sept. 6.

Brown spirits are all the rage nowadays. Alcohol authority Noah Rothbaum, author of the upcoming The Art of American Whiskey, tells you all about bourbon (Sept. 10) and rye (Sept. 18) — and yes, the lectures will be well-liquidated with samples.

The NYC cocktail cognoscenti all know Death & Co., a cozy speakeasy renowned for its modern twist on mixed classics. Its owners head uptown to 92nd Street Y to share some secret recipes, Oct. 13. And while it seems like something that went out with the Victorian parlor, sherry is actually “The Wine World’s Best Kept Secret”, argues Punch editor-in-chief Talia Baiocchi — and she’s throwing a tasting to prove it, at the Y on Nov. 20.
