Behind the Music with Louis Rosen: Gershwin at the Piano

George Gershwin spent many a fashionable 1920’s Manhattan party at the piano, spinning out endless improvisations on the songs he had written with his brother, Ira.

The saying was that, “An evening with Gershwin was a Gershwin evening.” Fortunately for all of us, he recorded some of these remarkable versions, and for those who haven’t heard them, they are a revelation, offering a direct, intimate portrait of how he heard his music. This lecture will explore this piano-centered side of Gershwin via these vintage recordings and performances and interviews taken from live radio broadcasts. As Ira, wrote, “’S Wonderful.”
