Contemporary Populism and Globalization

Speakers: Branko Milanovic, Prabhat Patnaik, and Sanjay Reddy

The last decade has seen the emergence of a form of politics that has frequently been called ‘populism.’ Some of these movements are of the left, many are of the right. Many of them are against globalization, some are for it (as in India and Turkey). Professors Milanovic, Patnaik, and Reddy will both seek to clarify some of these confusingly inconsistent and criss-crossing trends within contemporary populism and to identify common underlying elements of politics and political economy that prompt this phenomena in different parts of the globe.
