Nearly twenty years ago, Mike Wallace and Edwin Burrows published Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898, an epic historical narrative that won the Pulitzer for its portrait of New York City as the heart and soul of America. This year sees publication of the long-awaited follow-up, Greater Gotham: A History of New York City from 1898 to 1919, in which Wallace picks up the story at the pivotal moment when ambition, immigrant dreams, and Wall Street greed fueled the city’s expansion and rise to global prominence.
