Herstory Day

Herstory Day is an intergenerational celebration of women’s history in New York City with a focus on quilting, archiving, and art practices. This program honors women throughout New York City who are working today to archive and preserve their own histories. Drop in to join us for history in the making as we archive our own stories through various practices.  This program is free, designed for all ages, and features the following:

HEAR

11:00 am – Keynote Address: Staceyann Chin and her 5-year-old daughter, Zuri Chin

12:00 pm – Presentation by The Lesbian Herstory Archives: “In Memory of the Voices We Have Lost”

EXPLORE

Quilt Installation – On view 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Original quilts by local artists Sylvia Hernandez, Madeleine Appell, and Adjoa Jones De Almeida.

Pop-up Archive – On view 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
See recordings, t-shirts, and books from The Lesbian Herstory Archives.

MAKE

Quilt Making – 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Create your own square and add it to the collective quilt.

Oral History Recording – 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Bring a special object and work with a historian to share and document its story.

Screen-printing – 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Print an activist t-shirt or tote with street muralist, Lmnopi (t-shirts will be provided).

Light refreshments will be served.

Registration suggested, though not required. Arrive early for the best seats.

Family and Community Engagement programs are free with Museum admission. Activities are designed for adults and children to engage in together.
