Isamu Noguchi’s Dance Collaborations: A Rare Performance and Discussion of Expanding Universe

The sculptor, Isamu Noguchi, collaborated with five choreographers: George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Erick Hawkins and Ruth Page. This program is the first of a series.

Expanding Universe (1932), choreographed by Ruth Page with both set and costume by Isamu Noguchi, will be danced by former Martha Graham Dance Company member, Jennifer Conley, and seen here for the first time in decades. Additionally, Conley dances Martha Graham’s Frontier; Miki Orihara dances Graham’s Lamentation. Dakin Hart, Senior Curator, Noguchi Museum and Dr. Joellen Meglin, Ruth Page scholar discuss the sculptor and choreographers’ oeuvre. With assistance from the Ruth Page Foundation.
