2013 marks the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s greatest contributions to the “new birth” of freedom—the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address.

These efforts culminated in the Thirteenth Amendment, as dramatized in Steven Spielberg’s, Lincoln. Historian Holzer, script adviser to the film, author of the young reader’s companion book, and author of the new Civil War in 50 Objects, covers all these themes in a talk on the 1863 sesquicentennial.
