Homeland: Iraq Year Zero dir. Abbas Fahdel (2015, 334min)
One year before the US invasion of Iraq, France-based filmmaker Abbas Fahdel began work on this intimate record of daily life in his hometown of Baghdad, capturing the uncertain passage of time up through the early weeks of the occupation. The result is this two-part epic, in which the director eschews the shock-and-awe imagery of war journalism, focusing instead on the voices of civilians—including his own 12-year-old nephew Haider—who carry on in the face of impending tragedy. Called “the most significant work of art to come out of the Iraq war” (Huffington Post), Homeland: Iraq Year Zero is both a searing indictment of the occupation and a heartbreaking tribute to the people of Baghdad.
