If you’ve ever had a Barbie doll, or you know someone who did, chances are that Barbie was dressed in one of the thousands of designs created by Carol Spencer, author of Dressing Barbie: A Celebration of the Clothes That Made America’s Favorite Doll and the Incredible Woman Behind Them. For over thirty-five years, Spencer, collaborated with legendary figures at Mattel such as creator Ruth Handler, and original designer Charlotte Johnson to design the wardrobe of the American icon known as Barbie, the doll who has upended popular culture to become a societal force all her own, stylishly thriving in her one hundred and eighty different careers since she debuted in 1959.
This program is presented by The National Arts Club.
