Re-imagine the holidays with us as we host an interactive day featuring a show for little ones with PJ Play! Join us for our annual Hanukkah party featuring the always-delicious jelly-filled donuts and always-classic Bling Your Own Dreidel! You can also enjoy Family Swim, yoga, games, and our thrilling Havdallah concert in the final hour!

 

This event is FREE for 14Y Members. For non-members: $10 for children, $15 for adults, $45 for a family pass (up to five people). Non-member tickets may be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pauseplay-festival-of-lights-tickets-53027138599 or considering becoming a member today!

 

Highlights of the event include:

  • Sign decorating in the lobby to welcome the diversity of the community.
  • Community-Supported Agriculture Table: learn to support local farmers and get local produce at a discounted price.
  • Bling Your Own Dreidel: Have you always wanted to spin a dreidel that you’ve decorated yourself? Well, now you can! Will yours be shiny? Colorful? Silly? Maybe all three!
  • Playtime in the Gymnasium:
    • Gaga: Come hone your skills at this classic summer-camp game. 
    • Imagination Station: Let your imagination run wild with the 14thStreet Y’s popular set of blue creativity blocks.
    • Basketball: What do a basketball and a challah have in common? Drop by the gym to find out while you shoot some hoops.
  • Family Swim: Don’t miss this exotic aquatic opportunity. You’ve waited an entire year to play in the pool while singing along to your favorite Hanukkah classics. 
  • “Spin like a Dreidel” Dance Class: celebrate the joy of Hanukkah through movement and dance (suitable for kindergarten and above)
  • Shabbat Story Time: Listen to your favorite Hanukkah storybooks, and perhaps you’ll get to participate in your own story as well.
  • The Jewish Roots of Religious Fundamentalism: explore Hanukkah’s true story of religious extremism, and the resulting impact on American and Israeli culture.
  • PJ Plays presents: Simon’s Journey: a kind young ambitious light-filled boy, Simon makes his way to America. On his journey, he’s shipwrecked and marooned on an iceberg. Through these obstacles, Simon doesn’t give up the Chanukah celebration. He befriends a polar bear on the iceberg and together they share this Chanukah light and a sense of kindness towards one another. One good deed leads to another. What then happens during Chanukah with Simon and the Bear… you’ll have to come find out.
  • Wax, Oil, and Fire – The Science of the Menorah: Why do menorah candles burn? How were menorahs lit in the old days? Learn about the science behind the miracle!
  • Braiding the Havdallah Candle – A Dance and Movement Experience: Prepare for the fun of havdallah through movement and dance! (Pre-K and below)
  • Reflections on Welcoming – Radical Hospitality in the 21st Century, and Why it Matters: Explore the 14th Street Y’s commitment to hospitality in this interactive conversation with the After School and New Country Day Camp teams (featuring wine and cheese) 
  • 14Y Community Havdallah Dance Party: Make a joyous and musical transition into the new week with new melodies, old classics, and your favorite 14th Street Y program heads!

Ready to rethink how you spend those chilly winter weekends? PAUSE/PLAY invites you to hit the pause button in your busy lives and experience all that our Downtown Community has to offer. We welcome everyone in our community, Jewish or not, to join us for a day of relaxation and renewal. From family yoga and story-time to whiskey tastings and open swim, these events feature activities for the whole family. PAUSE/PLAY is open to all ages in our diverse downtown community.

PAUSE/PLAY is generously funded by the UJA Federation of New York, the Covenant Foundation, and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
