After years of war and countless lives, Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox sealed the fate of the Confederate cause and conceded defeat… or so we thought. In her book, “How the South Won the Civil War: Oligarchy, Democracy, and the Continuing Fight for the Soul of America”, Boston College Professor of History Heather Cox Richardson illuminates the history of how the American paradox of rugged individualism in subservient hierarchies incubated the ideology of the Confederacy as it grew into its current form: the Movement Conservative. Richardson is led in conversation by Professor of History at Yale Joanne Freeman.
